Colleges, Universities Eligible for $1 Billion in Research Facility Funding
Washington, March 12 — Public and private institutions of higher education are among the organizations eligible for $1 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment funding to construct, repair or renovate research institutions, National Institutes of Health (NIH) officials announced today.
Institutions may compete for grants ranging from $1 million to $15 million in two categories: core facility renovation, repair and improvement; and extramural (non-NIH-based) research facilities improvement.
Public and private institutions of higher education may apply for both pots of funding, which must be spent "expeditiously." Applicants must also consider green or sustainable technologies and design approaches.
This is part of the stimulus funding available for postsecondary institutions through federal research and science agencies. NIH, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in particular, all received stimulus money to finance infrastructure projects at colleges, universities and other research enterprises.
