Special Report: Higher Education Featured Prominently in Stimulus, But Final Amounts Await Decisions
The recently enacted economic stimulus package provides community colleges and other institutions of higher education (IHEs) numerous funding opportunities for needs in research, infrastructure, job training, technology and other uses. But staff at those higher education institutions digging through the 407-page law must understand that many of the specific spending decisions have not been made.
“What I’ve been saying to institutions,” said Terry Hartle, senior vice president of the American Council on Education, “is identify the parts of the stimulus package that you are interested in, reach out to your elected officials to make sure they know that this college or university in their state or district is particularly concerned about x or y or z and get the congressional offices to help run interference for you with executive branch agencies to ensure that something doesn’t happen so quickly that [you] simply miss the opportunity to apply.”
