Obama Administration, Governors Express Commitment to Education Reform


Washington, February 24 — President Barack Obama and other administration officials told the nation’s governors that they are look at linking Title I funding to the adoption of higher reading and math standards as part of their strategy to reauthorize the eight-year-old No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law.

In a Monday meeting with governors at the White House, Obama emphasized ways to align federal and state efforts to boost student achievement. The president said his administration would propose requiring states to adopt new math and reading academic standards as a condition for qualifying for the more than $14 billion in federal Title I funding available each year.
