Obama Pens Letter Urging Action on Jobs Bills

WASHINGTON, June 14 — President Obama urged congressional leaders Saturday to swiftly approve funding to prevent teacher layoffs and provide other aid to states, saying the assistance is the best way to keep the fragile economic recovery on track.

Fate of Education Jobs Bill in Question

WASHINGTON, June 1 — Prospects are dimming for schools to avoid job cuts in the upcoming school year as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) winds down. Nonetheless, many are hoping that Congress will provide an infusion of $23 billion to essentially extend by one year the 2009 ARRA State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, which has been mostly drained by economically struggling states and localities.

CBO Says ARRA Scored on Job Creation

WASHINGTON, June 1 — The number of full-time-equivalent jobs generated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) increased from 1.8 million to 4.1 million in the first quarter of 2010, according to new estimates by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

WASHINGTON, May 26 — The heads of the major teachers’ associations joined key members of Congress and the Obama administration today on Capitol Hill to launch a new “Speak Up for Education & Kids” campaign designed to rally support for passing $23 billion in emergency funding to preserve local education jobs.

WASHINGTON, May 24 — The U.S. Department of Education (ED) last week published an eight-page addendum to its nearly 40 pages of guidance on the Race to the Top (RTT) Assessment program, which will provide funding to consortia of states to develop student achievement tests.
